Plasma-Assisted Catalysis

In this project, our work focuses on exploring the fundamental chemistry that governs the catalytic conversion of NxOy species. We have been synthesizing Al2O3 catalysts doped with various precious metals and are exploring the impact they have on plasmas formed from model exhaust gases. By correlating species densities and reaction kinetics, we are able to explore the mechanisms that control successful conversion of harmful combustion byproducts.

Biopolymer Modification

In this project, a collaboration with the Hawker Group at California State University - Fresno, we focus on exploring the mechanisms that govern the plasma-enhanced surface modification of natural polymers. These materials are designed for biomedical applications, but widespread use is limited by irregularities and inconsistencies in the treatment outcomes. By monitoring the underlying chemistry of these systems, we hope to provide insight on how to achieve desirable modifications in a reliable manner.

Carbon Fiber Functionalization

Carbon fiber plays a critical role in aerospace and automotive materials, due to its impressive strength-to-weight ratio. In this project, we aim to explore the plasma-functionalization of these materials that allow for the surface to be tailored for precision applications without impacting its critical bulk properties.
